Abstract |

Lead was replaced with methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in car-fuel in United States since 1979, and in Saudi Arabia, and other Arabian Gulf States since January 2001. The reason for lead removal is that it is known to cause deleterious effects on health and the environment. MTBE is added to gasoline at 12-15%. It dissolves readily in water and evaporates quickly. This study focused on the possible health hazards of MTBE in drinking water as manifested by changes on inorganic blood chemistry. The study also tries to draw a quantitative relationship between MTBE concentration and changes of the inorganic metals. One hundred twenty male Wistar rats were exposed to five different MTBE concentrations (0.0, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 ppm) for 60 days. The results showed that the element that most significantly (p = 0.004) increases is Sodium. It increases at all concentrations except 2,500ppm by 1.1%, 0.83%, and 1.3 % respectively. Chloride significantly (p = 0.046) increases only at 1,000 and 2,500ppm MTBE by1.3%, and 2.2 % respectively. Also, MTBE significantly (p = 0.017) increased phosphorus in plasma but only at the concentration 1,500 ppm MTBE by 11.7 %. Magnesium and calcium plasma levels are decreased significantly. Mg level decreased (p = 0.016) by 8.7 % at only 2,000 ppm MTBE, and Ca (p = 0.01) by 2.3% at only 1,000 ppm MTBE. Potassium and iron content showed no significant change at all MTBE concentrations. As a conclusion, MTBE may cause polyuria, diarrhea or vomiting as a result of liver injury and renal failure leading to increase in plasma Na and Cl, and decrease in Mg. MTBE causes hypoparathyroidism which increases plasma P and decreases Ca. MTBE may also cause renal disturbance and gastrointestinal disorders, which disturb the absorption and the reabsorption of all these metals. |
