Abstract
:
This study tries to answer the following question: Is there a statistically meaningful relationship between the EPS realized by a listed* A firm in a certain year and the desire to invest in its stock in the following year? If it happens to be such a relationship then the EPS should be taken into consideration as one of the important factors that are to be considered when trying to explain the changes that happen in the velocity of stock in Jordan, or when such changes are forecasted. Otherwise, there will be no need to take it into consideration in such attempts. In this search for an answer, this writer chose 12 firms (about 13% of the listed firms at the time of the study) in a way that represents the four major economic sectors in Jordan. i.e.. the banking and financial institutions sector. the insurance sector. the services and the industry ones. The firms of each sector were ranked first. according to their EPS in every year from 1979 to 1982. and second. the same firms were also ranked according to the velocity of their stock in every year from 1980 to 1983. Then the spearman coefficient of correlation between the ranks of every firm was calculated, after that, the meaningfulness of the relationship was examined. The writer has found that the calculated correlation coefficient is positive in all the firms but it is less than the value of 0.878, which is the least meaningful value at 3 degrees of freedom, except for only one firm. So, it can easily be concluded that there is no statistically meaningful relationship between the EPS of the listed in the Amman financial market firms and the desire to invest in their in Jordan.
