Abstract
:
In spite of the positive environmental and visual impact of the forestation project in Arafat (a twenty-year long undertaking by Fakeeh Group), the agencies concerned with Hajj affairs have cited and repeatedly pointed out to numerous drawbacks in the recent past. These negative aspects, allegedly, include violations to crowd mobilization and evacuation procedures, spatial requirements, safety and security concerns, and public health concerns. Needless to say, any effort to preserve this man-made, mono-culture, Neem forest must not ignore what is objectively ascertained to be a legitimate Hajj related demand. This study, therefore, has a primary goal of assessing and rectifying conditions of the Arafat Tree Planting Project so as to balance the effort to preserve it against the need to satisfy the aforementioned practical concerns. Other objectives to supplement this goal include: 1) Assessment of the existing conditions of the Arafat Tree Planting Project. This includes observing variations (in the plant cover) in size, age, density, plant health and overall form, distribution pattern, and conditions of the supporting infrastructure. 2) Delineating distinct land units across Arafat which lend themselves to typical planning and design solutions. The categorization will be based on the units’ natural and man-made features. 3) Preparing site plans/designs for a select set of camp sites representing the various land units identified in #2. 4) Preparing a list of performance criteria and measures to supplement the typical plans (produced in #3). These will guide the decision to match design solutions to individual situations.
