Abstract : This study has been focused on evaluating the potential of processes involving adsorptive materials for the removal of Cu (II), Ni (II), and Cr (III) ions, (as a model for pollutants commonly found in industrial electroplating wastewater) from synthetic wastewater solutions. Advanced adsorbed materials {Generation 4 polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers with ethylenediamine cores (G4-OH)} were immobilized on titania (TiO2) and examined as novel metal chelation materials. Detailed study of the effect of various important parameters that influence the efficiency of metal ion removal, such as solution pH, retention time, metal ion concentration, and composite material dosage, was undergone. Real wastewater samples from metal plating industry containing heavy metal ions were applied, analyzed, and evaluated. Batch experiments with a representative real wastewater samples containing the heavy metals were conducted and evaluated at the proper conditions of the synthetic samples. Results obtained showed that metals adsorption was achieved over a wide metal concentration range within 30 minutes equilibration time. Maximum metal ion removal was achieved at pH ≥ 7 for both Cu (II) and Cr (III), and pH ≥ 9 for Ni (II). The adsorption efficiency values were 98.6%, 99.9%, and 99.6% for Cu(II) , Cr(III) , and Ni(II) respectively at a metal ions concentration of 50 mg/l for each at the previous optimum conditions. On applying the optimum treatment conditions on three real wastewater samples (containing nickel, copper and chromium ions independently) from electroplating, the results showed blocking the adsorption process of both copper and chromium samples. Blocking of copper adsorption was due to presence of cyanide ions on the copper rinse water. Therefore, the copper-cyanide complex was treated firstly by using sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl) to break cyanide ions, and then treated with the denderimers adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency of Cu was 99.8% at pH ≥ 11. For the second sample, the chromium was found as Cr(VI) in the chromium rinse tank. Therefore (NaHSO3) was used to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) , and then the dendrimers were added. The efficiency of chromium removal was 99.9%. On theother hand, dendrimers succeeded to remove Ni(II) ions from nickel rinse tank. The adsorption efficiency was 92% (compared to 29% removal efficiency by precipitation in the absence of dendrimer ) .
