Abstract
:
This study discusses self archiving of scientific production at Arab library and information science departments’ faculty members websites. It monitors the reasons why some of them do not display their production on the web. Self archiving is a Personal Digital repository to benefit from the intellectual output of a researcher. Self archiving means: "the process of making a digital copy from the files of the scientific production of a researcher in his personal page on the web. This page may be institutional or non-institutional. Also the production itself may be already published or still a draft.” This study seeks to identify the trends of researchers in library and information science departments in Arab countries about archiving their own scientific production. It monitors the constraints that prevent self archiving. It also identifies the general characteristics of scientific productions available through researchers’ websites. It detects the trends of Arab electronic journals publishers specialized in the field of library and information about self archiving. The empirical approach used to address the research problem was a field study with a questionnaire for library and information science researchers to explore their opinions about self archiving in their formal or informal websites. It also used a checklist to analyze the content of personal websites which contained self archiving. The study shows that young Arab researchers (40%) in the field are the most self archiving, and that the Department of Library, Documents and Information science at Cairo University is ranked the first in terms of the number of researchers affiliated to it and their having self archiving. The Library and Information Science department at King Saud University is ranked the first in terms of the total number of information sources archived. At the end of the paper, the researcher provides recommendations that aim at promoting the idea of self-archiving of Arab researchers specialized in library and information science, Arab universities and publishers.
