Abstract |

Digital publishing has gone through four basic stages which are major milestones in the history of publishing; including librarian publishing, publishing on laser disks, publishing on websites, finally "wireless publishing" which represents the expectations of the future of publishing and the current orientations towards modernizing alternatives to create digital content and distribute it via radio communication.
"Wireless publishing" is defined as "a technology which combines using internet and radio communication in content production process, managing such content and circulating it among readers wherever and whenever they are, using the appropriate instrument such as: mobile phones and wireless reader devices". This equipment depends upon accessing the internet via mobile phones and laptops, using the technology of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This protocol is concerned with translating internet information, so as to be easily presented on mobile phones' screens as well as other wireless devices.
The number of mobile phones' users over the world has reached 5, 4 billion users by the end of 2009 within less than 20 years. This number represents two thirds of world population. This fact enhances the idea of making the digital content available through using mobile phones. Furthermore, the number of those who access the internet via mobile phones has reached half billion users within the same year. It is expected that this number would rise within the next five years and exceed the number of internet users through computers. This conclusion encouraged the annual report issued by Chinese digital publishing industry in 2007 to indicate that future of digital publishing is rapidly and increasingly flourishing in the field of wireless publishing. This also incited the international mobile phones' conference held in "Barcelona" in 2010 to announce that if a certain task should be put on the top of this year's agenda, it is important to put the implementation of a strategy which makes the content available through mobile phones. In addition to this, it is mentioned in the most recent report on the sales of electronic books in Japan that the sales of books available on mobile phones are estimated by 80%. This goes back to developing readers devices especially iPods.
According to the above, there is a dire need to conduct a methodical study which examines the elements of using mobile phones to allow Arabic digital content so as to keep in line with the international orientation and make use of the practices as well as the study of the possibility to apply such technology in the Arab world. From this point, this study aims at the following:
1. Recognizing how much the elements of using mobile phones to broadcast the content within Arabic digital content industry institutions.
2. Observing the reasons of the sluggishness of mobile phones to broadcast the content within Arabic digital content industry institutions.
3. Indicating the problems caused by using mobile phones to broadcast the digital content besides finding the ways to get over them.
4. Raising the awareness of the merits of accessing Arabic digital content via mobile phones and its requirements.
The study has used the analytic descriptive approach. It also depended upon auditing and clarification list considering them as instruments of collecting data about the items of this study, In addition to logging in Arabic digital content websites among the considered publishers and libraries. |
