Herbal plants are used to treat many microbial diseases. It is also used instead of antibiotics because, it is safe, effective, inexpensive, more accessible, because many microbes resistant to antibiotics. 5 plants were used in this research, local herbal plants and their activities were compared with 3 herbal mixtures collected from herbal shops, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Dry leaves of local herbal plants were used and they were Lawsonia inermis (henna), Ziziphus spinoza (Sidr), Cassia senna (Alsenamki), Sysimbrium irio (Alshleyat) and Solenostemma arghel (Alhargel). It was found that the henna plant extract was the most effective in the inhibition of the microbes followed by Alsidr, Alsenamaki, Alshleyat, then Alhargel respectively. The acetone extract of herbal plants is often the most effective solvent, followed by alcoholic and water extract. The tested microbes were Candida albicans (yeast), Trichophyton tonsuran, Aspergillus flavus, A. parasiticus, A. niger, A. terreus, Microsporum gypseum, M. canis (fungi), B. subtilis and S. aureus (bacteria). Candida albicans was the most affected by herbal plant while A. niger was the least affected. All used microbes were taken from microbiological Lab., King AbdulAziz University, Jeddah except Microsporum gypseum, M. canis, Trichophyton tonsuran which taken from Military hospital lab., Riyadh. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the henna plant extract was between 2.5 - 5 mg/ml while the minimum inhibitory concentration of another plant extracts was 10 mg / ml on tested microbes. Synergistic effect of the plant extract for Henna and Sidr extract led to an increase in the inhibition of microbes ranging between 0.2 and 0.7 ml. One herbal mixture inhibited the growth of the tested microbes moderately while others were not effective. To determine the herbal plants effectiveness, different commercial antifungal agent were used including Antifungal nail liquid which was the best one for fungal inhibition, Amphotericin B, Nystatin and Itraconazole. The standard antibacterial used was Ampicillin. The effect of the most active extract which was the acetonic extract of Lawsonia inermis on the morphology of fungal spores under scanning electron microscope lead to different changes on the fungal spores morphology. Acetone ectract of L.inermis showed no toxicity Carcinoma (HTB-26) at concentration of 400 μg/ml. The relation between concentration of Lawsonia inermis and Ziziphus spina-christi acetonic extract and there inhibitory effect on toxic fungi (growth, mycotoxin production) was positive correlation. |
